of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg

Dear friends,

It is my great honor to share with you that the Board of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg has extended an invitation to me to serve as their congregation’s minister, and I have accepted. This is an unexpected and welcome opportunity to work with this vital congregation. The UU Church is a gathering of spiritual seekers and independent thinkers, people of conscience devoted to building a more just and livable society for us all. I am grateful for their trust in me to serve with them. My first Sunday will be August 20.

The historical commitment of this congregation to catalyze community transformation is a major reason that I have answered this call. What so many of us have accomplished together over the last two years is extraordinary. The church wants to propel us forward with even greater momentum. As part of that effort, I will continue to serve as Strategist with Speaking Down Barriers. My goal remains for us all—individuals, congregations, organizations, and communities—to access and serve from our deepest gifts.

Energized by such an expanding network of partners, who knows what we will create? I am eager for what I sense coming.

Thank you for your encouragement,

Scott

Below is a link to a trial sermon I preached for the church, outlining some of what I anticipate for the year ahead:

Scott, I don’t know you personally but know your mom and dad. I know that they have undoubtedly raised you to think selflessly and generously. I am appreciative of who you are and what you are doing. It takes great courage. One day at a time, Sweet Jesus.

Scott, this is such happy news for me! The people at UUCS are lovely and I believe this is a wonderful opportunity not only for you, but for them. I wish you all the best, and look forward to a Sunday off, so I can visit.
