This is a very fine op-ed from a Spartanburg Baptist leader on the issue of refugee resettlement, from a few weeks ago.
As a Christian whose perspective does not always align with that of my evangelical brothers and sisters, I find that on this issue we are in great agreement. And as a person whose ancestors came from many nations to this one seeking religious freedom and economic opportunity, I am reminded of this story, retold many times in the Bible:
“33 When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. 34 The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:33-34)
Let us be our best selves, and welcome the stranger.
