In her newest exhibition of paintings, frame maker, gallery owner, and painter Brandi Dice pushes her imagery and technique further into abstraction. Known for ingenuous comic depictions of childhood toys and candy dispensers, Dice retains in these paintings a wry sensibility and buoyant use of color. The joy and ease of her tone remain as welcoming as ever.
But in her move deeper into the abstract, Dice develops a new element to her painting, arresting in its newness and beauty. Incorporating a layer of gloss medium to the surface of the finished canvas, she introduces light into her work in a new way. Her use of the new material exceeds its normal effect. She applies it thickly, as thorough and total as glass over a framed work. The result is a luminous depth rare in contemporary painting. The effect is so strong, it not only enhances the colors that lie beneath the transparent surface. The quality of light is so rich, the light has become a color of its own.
Fascinatingly, a number of the paintings develop out of relatively light brush strokes. Yet they offer a presence that is strong. A warmth, assured and clear, emerges from the pictures toward us.
A fullness, a kindness, a mischievous delight hums within these paintings.
How like their maker they seem to be.
