Why do we so strongly resist keeping the Sabbath? This sermon, offered during Lent 2016 at First Presbyterian Church-Woodruff, SC, delves into the gift offered us by the commandment to stop once a week to rest. The Sabbath connects us with the power of God in creation, helps us resist oppression that would erase us, and causes us to pass through the grief of our lives to find a different joy.
The first reading is from Exodus 20:8-11.
The second reading is from Deuteronomy 5:12-15, a reiteration of the commandment with a new explanation of why it is important.
The Gospel reading is from Luke 23:50-56, the story of Jesus’ burial. It is the story of Holy Saturday.
This is the stunning journalism of Latria Graham that begins this sermon.
And this is Rabbi Seth Castleman, who transformed our home on a Friday night all too long ago.
Keep the Sabbath.
