…and after my skin has been thus destroyed,
then in my flesh I shall see God…
From where does faith come? A sermon on the book of Job, preached at Landrum Presbyterian Church on October 23, 2016, on unjust suffering and a faith beyond anything we have been taught.
Job has lost everything. His wealth is destroyed. His children have died. His health is ruined. Slandered by the stunted worldview of Deuteronomic theology, precursor of the Prosperity Gospel, his reputation is ruined and his friends ridicule him.
And God on High has allowed all this to happen. The God of his childhood, the God of duty and dutiful security, has abandoned him to cruelty and injustice.
From this hell, Job cries out with a vision of life in God never seen in the Bible before this moment.
