When only a small boy, Samuel was called by God to speak truth to power in the most difficult way–directly to his guardian, the priest Eli, under whom the religious institutions of their day had become self-serving and corrupt behind a guise of holiness. This is the story of a father who does not discipline his biological children when they abuse power, but whose foster child sees and speaks the truth. This is a sermon for fathers and children–biological, foster, adopted, mentored, prodigal–blessed and blessing across the complications and failures fatherhood brings.
Fatherhood is a calling, a calling to second chances for both children and parents–chances that extend beyond even the boundaries of this life.
