“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God…” (Psalm 46:4)
I was honored to preach this Sunday, July 17, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church-Greer. Our text was Psalm 46, a poem that promises refuge and strength in God when we are assailed and our way seems hopeless.
When nothing is right, when everything is broken, when the just are under siege and conflict is unrelenting, a voice overwhelms the din:
“Be still, and know that I am God!” (Psalm 46:10)
And a spring wells up within us, to bring cold, clear, soothing drink to a world burning with thirst,
thirst for justice, thirst for righteousness,
thirst for mercy, thirst for God,
thirst for peace.
We gathered in the wake of tragedy in Baton Rouge, Minnesota, Dallas, Nice, Turkey, and many more places where our sisters and brothers live.
The service may be viewed here. The sermon begins at 25:50:
As we worshiped, we began receiving reports on our cell phones of a second shooting in Baton Rouge, resulting in the death of three police officers and the assailant.
