I was privileged to preach this Sunday at First Presbyterian Church-Woodruff, SC. Our text was the key passage spoken by Joshua as he renews the covenant between the people of Israel and God at Shechem: “…choose this day whom you will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
Joshua offers this stirring resolution with stringent requirements for unfailing faithfulness to God. But even he recognizes how difficult this is, how likely the people are to fail (Joshua 24:19). He sets a compelling but daunting standard.
What do we do, when we resolve to build our own homes according to this standard, and then we ourselves fall far short?
Jesus gives us a story to think in a new way about the faithful household, including our failures.
